How to Find Businesses That Need ServSafe Certification in Your Area

Here’s something most new ServSafe instructors don’t realize until they’ve been at it for a while: the clients are already out there. You don’t have to create demand. The demand exists. You just have to show up.

I’ve been proctoring and instructing ServSafe for over 20 years. This is how you build a client base that pays you consistently.

Your Market Is Bigger Than You Think

Every food service establishment in your area employs people who are either required or strongly encouraged to hold ServSafe certification. That’s not a small pool.

Think about it: restaurants, school cafeterias, hospital kitchens, nursing homes, corporate dining facilities, prisons, catering companies, hotel food service, daycare centers. These businesses aren’t going anywhere. They turn over staff constantly. Certifications expire. Managers change. Every one of those events is a reason for them to call you.

This is recurring business. Not one-and-done.

Build the List. Work the List.

Start with your ZIP code and go outward. Write down every food service business you can find. Don’t overthink it — a spreadsheet with a name, address, and phone number is all you need to start.

Then work it like a professional. Drop off business cards in person — a face-to-face visit is worth ten phone calls. Follow up every three to four months. Things change constantly in food service: new managers, new staff, expired certifications, ownership changes. The business that didn’t need you in March might desperately need you in June.

Consistency wins this game. The instructors who build real income from ServSafe are the ones who treat this list like a sales territory — adding to it regularly, touching it on a schedule, and staying top of mind.

Lead With What You Can Do For Them

Here’s where most new instructors get it wrong. They lead with pricing. They hand over a brochure. They talk about packages and tiers and what’s included.

Nobody cares.

What a busy restaurant manager cares about is this: can you make this easy for me? Lead with that.

“I can come to your location.”

“Weekends work fine — whatever is easiest for your team.”

“I can have your manager certified within two hours.”

“You don’t have to send anyone anywhere or rearrange a schedule.”

That’s the pitch. You are the solution to a problem they have been putting off because it seemed like a hassle. The moment you tell them you’ll come to them, work around their hours, and get it done fast — the conversation changes. You’re not selling a certification class. You’re selling convenience, speed, and one less thing on their plate.

The price becomes secondary. The value is obvious.
