Getting Started Guide
Explore clear, step-by-step instructions tailored for ServSafe proctors and instructors to confidently begin their roles.
Getting Credentialed
Follow these three steps and you will be fully credentialed as a ServSafe proctor and instructor — ready to start building your practice.
- 1. Get your study materials The official ServSafe Manager Book runs approximately $50–$70 at ServSafe.com or approved retailers. Prefer a fully guided online course? ServSafe offers one for approximately $125. Alternatively you can purchase the SafePrep App for only $4.99 which prepares you faster and lets you know when you are ready to pass the ServSafe exam.
- 2. Study and prepare The exam is 90 questions, 2 hours, and requires a 75% passing score. Our top recommendation for self-study — the intuitive SafePrep app.
- 3. Purchase the online exam and find a proctor Purchase your online exam access code at ServSafe.com, then find a local ServSafe proctor to administer it. Find a proctor near you →
If you’ve ever tried to figure out how to become a ServSafe proctor, you already know the problem. The ServSafe website is confusing, the process isn’t clearly explained anywhere, and there’s nobody to ask. You’re not alone — this is the wall every new proctor hits.
This guide walks you through the entire process, step by step, in plain English.
Step 1: Pass the ServSafe Manager Exam
Before you can become a proctor, you need to hold a current ServSafe Manager certification. If you haven’t taken the exam yet, that’s your first step. The certification is valid for five years.
Step 2: Register as a ServSafe Proctor
Go to ServSafe.com and create an account if you don’t have one. Once logged in, navigate to the Proctor registration section. You’ll need to provide your certification information and agree to the proctor agreement terms.
Step 3: Understand What a Proctor Does
A proctor administers the ServSafe exam to candidates. You are not teaching the material — you are overseeing the test. You verify IDs, distribute exam materials, monitor the session, and submit completed exams for grading.
Step 4: Set Your Fee
ServSafe does not set proctor fees. You set your own. Typical fees range from $25 to $75 per candidate depending on your market, location, and whether you’re running group sessions or individual exams.
Step 5: Find Your First Client
Restaurants, hotels, schools, and food service companies all need ServSafe certified managers. Contact local restaurants directly, reach out to restaurant associations in your area, or list yourself in proctor directories to start building your client base.
FoodSafetyMadeEasy.com is built specifically for ServSafe proctors and instructors. Whether you’re just getting started or looking to grow your business, everything you need is here.
- 1. Log in to ServSafe.com Go to Instructors/Proctors in your dashboard and select your credential type — Proctor only, Certified Instructor, or Dual Role.
- 2. Complete required training Proctor only: complete the Exam Administration Handbook tutorial and quiz. Dual Role/Instructor: pass the Instructor Advanced Test — open book, 90% required, up to 3 attempts in 12 months.
- 3. Wait for approval ServSafe reviews your application and issues your credential via dashboard — typically 1–2 weeks.
